The development of library in Nigeria began in 1920 when the Lagos book club was formed. This club was formed by a group of expatriates and few Nigerians. The moving figure behind the library's creation was Sir Alan Burns, author of the 'History of Nigeria’ who was also an important figure in an expatriate book club in Lagos. Sir Alan Burns enlisted the financial support of Carnegie Foundation which contributed the bulk of the $ 6,500 used for establishing the library and the book club's books were later transferred to Lagos library. As result the Lagos Library was inaugurated in 1932. Henry Carr, a prominent Nigerian had an appreciable collection of 18,000 volumes of books. Nigerian government later bought his collections after his death in 1945.
ReplyDeleteThe University College Ibadan was established in 1948 and Henry Carr’s collection formed the nucleus of the University Library. Herbert Macaulay, a nationalist politician also had a library which contained documents, pamphlets, books and ephemeral materials which were very important for the history, politics and culture of the people. The British Council Library was opened in 1943 to serve as an information centre during the war as well as provide facilities for the people interested in reading. The British Council Library later established branches in Kaduna, Enugu, Ibadan and Benin City.
Tom Jones, a very rich Nigerian merchant directed in his will that a library should be provided from his estate for the people of Lagos. As a result of his donation for the establishment of the library a building known as Tom Jones Library came to being. The National Library of Nigeria came into existence by the National Library Act passed in September, 1964. This Act was later replaced and substituted with the National Library Decree No 29 of 1970. Libraries in Nigeria continue to develop as we have libraries in all the states as well as universities, research institutes, organizations, etc.
A library is a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for use or borrowing by the public or the members of an institution.

DeleteThe first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing – the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in temple rooms in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC. About an inch thick, tablets came in various shapes and sizes. Mud-like clay was placed in the wooden frames, and the surface was smoothed for writing and allowed to dry until damp. After being inscribed, the clay dried in the sun, or for a harder finish, was baked in a kiln. For storage, tablets could be stacked on edge, side by side, the contents described by a title written on the edge that faced out and was readily seen. The first libraries appeared five thousand years ago in Southwest Asia's Fertile Crescent, an area that ran from Mesopotamia to the Nile in Africa. Known as the cradle of civilization, the Fertile Crescent was the birthplace of writing, sometime before 3000 BC. (Murray, Stuart A.P.) These archives, which mainly consisted of the records of commercial transactions or inventories, mark the end of prehistory and the start of history.
ReplyDeleteThings were much the same in the government and temple records on papyrus of Ancient Egypt.[2] The earliest discovered private archives were kept at Ugarit; besides correspondence and inventories, texts of myths may have been standardized practice-texts for teaching new scribes. There is also evidence of libraries at Nippur about 1900 BC and those at Nineveh about 700 BC showing a library classification system
Over 30,000 clay tablets from the Library of Ashurbanipal have been discovered at Nineveh, providing modern scholars with an amazing wealth of Mesopotamian literary, religious and administrative work. Among the findings were the Enuma Elish, also known as the Epic of Creation, which depicts a traditional Babylonian view of creation, the Epic of Gilgamesh, a large selection of "omen texts" including Enuma Anu Enlil which "contained omens dealing with the moon, its visibility, eclipses, and conjunction with planets and fixed stars, the sun, its corona, spots, and eclipses, the weather, namely lightning, thunder, and clouds, and the planets and their visibility, appearance, and stations", and astronomic/astrological texts, as well as standard lists used by scribes and scholars such as word lists, bilingual vocabularies, lists of signs and synonyms, and lists of medical diagnoses.
The tablets were stored in a variety of containers such as wooden boxes, woven baskets of reeds, or clay shelves. The "libraries" were cataloged using colophons, which are a publisher's imprint on the spine of a book, or in this case a tablet. The colophons stated the series name, the title of the tablet, and any extra information the scribe needed to indicate. Eventually, the clay tablets were organized by subject and size. Unfortunately, due to limited bookshelf space, when more tablets were added to the library, older ones were removed, which is why some tablets are missing from the excavated cities in Mesopotamia.
According to legend, mythical philosopher Laozi was keeper of books in the earliest library in China, which belonged to the Imperial Zhou dynasty. Also, evidence of catalogues found in some destroyed ancient libraries illustrates the presence of librarians.
“Library -- from the Latin liber, meaning "book." In Greek and the Romance languages, the corresponding term is bibliotheca. A collection or group of collections of books and/or other print or nonprint materials organized and maintained for use (reading, consultation, study, research, etc.).

The development of printing presses caused a revolution in the growth of libraries, also printing led to higher literary rates along with cheaper and more widely available books became a symbol among the elites of Europe and others. The history of libraries began with the first efforts to organize collections of documents. Topics of interest include accessibility of the collection, acquisition of materials, arrangement and finding tools, the book trade, the influence of the physical properties of the different writing materials, language distribution, role in education, rates of literacy, budgets, staffing, libraries for targeted audiences, architectural merit, patterns of usage, and the role of libraries in a nation's cultural heritage, and the role of government, church or private sponsorship. Computerization and digitization arose from the 1960s, and changed many aspects of libraries.

Known as the cradle of civilization, the Fertile Crescent was the birthplace of writing, sometime before 3000 BC.
The earliest example in England of a library to be endowed for the benefit of users who were not members of an institution such as a cathedral or college was the Francis Trigge Chained Library in Grantham, Lincolnshire, established in 1598. The library still exists and can justifiably claim to be the forerunner of later public library systems. The beginning of the modern, free, open access libraries really got its start in the UK in 1847. Parliament appointed a committee, led by William Ewart, on Public Libraries to consider the necessity of establishing libraries through the nation: In 1849 their report noted the poor condition of library service, it recommended the establishment of free public libraries all over the country, and it led to the Public Libraries Act in 1850, which allowed all cities with populations exceeding 10,000 to levy taxes for the support of public libraries.
Salford Museum and Art Gallery first opened in November 1850 as "The Royal Museum & Public Library", as the first unconditionally free public library in England.[164][165] The library in Campfield, Manchester was the first library to operate a free lending library without subscription in 1852.

Library in Nigeria This is the first attempt to coherently document the immense contributions of one of Africa’s foremost nationalists and pan–Africanists to the development of libraries in Nigeria. Although he is best known for his achievements in politics, journalism, and sports, Dr. Azikiwe saw the library as a vehicle for the intellectual emancipation of Nigerians from colonial rule.
As President of Eastern Nigeria in the 1950s, the first and only indigenous Governor–General, and first President of Nigeria in the 1960s, he was able to wield sufficient political influence to ensure a legal basis for public library development in Nigeria, the establishment of the University of Nigeria Library – named after himself – and the eventual creation of the National Library of Nigeria.

Most of its titles were archival documents, religious incantations and scholarly texts, but it also housed several works of literature including the 4,000-year-old “Epic of Gilgamesh.” The book-loving Ashurbanipal compiled much of his library by looting works from Babylonia and the other territories he conquered. Archaeologists later stumbled upon its ruins in the mid-19th century, and the majority of its contents are now kept in the British Museum in London. Interestingly, even though Ashurbanipal acquired many of his tablets through plunder, he seems to have been particularly worried about theft. An inscription in one of the texts warns that if anyone steals its tablets, the gods will “cast him down” and “erase his name, his seed, in the land.”

1.HISTORY OF LIBRARY
In earliest times there was no distinction between a record room (or archive) and a library, and in this sense libraries can be said to have existed for almost as long as records have been kept. A temple in the Babylonian town of Nippur, dating from the first half of the 3rd millennium BC, was found to have a number of rooms filled with clay tablets, suggesting a well-stocked archive or library. Similar collections of Assyrian clay tablets of the 2nd millennium BC were found at Tell el- amarna in Egypt . Ashurbanipal(reigned 668–c. 627 BC), the last of the great kings of Assyria, maintained an archive of some 25,000 tablets, comprising transcripts and texts systematically collected from temples throughout his kingdom.
Many collections of records were destroyed in the course of wars or were purposely purged when rulers were replaced or when governments fell. In ancient China, for example, the emperor Shih huang ti a member of the Ch’in dynasty and ruler of the first unified Chinese empire, ordered that historical records other than those of the Ch’in be destroyed so that history might be seen to begin with his dynasty . Repression of history was lifted, however, under the Han dynasty , which succeeded the Ch’in in 206 BC; works of antiquity were recovered, the writing of literature as well as record keeping were encouraged, and classification schemes were developed. Some favoured a seven-part classification, which included the Confucian classics, philisophy , rhymed work (both prose and poetry), military prose, scientific and occult writings, summaries, and medicine. A later system categorized writings into four types: the classics, history, philosophy, and miscellaneous works. The steady growth of libraries was facilitated by the entrenchment of the civil service system, founded in the 2nd century during the Han dynasty and lasting into the 20th century; this required applicants to memorize classics and to pass difficult examinations. It’s an organization that’s is concerned with the collection processing storage and dissemination of information for the purpose of reading study and research and consultation.Islam (2004) described library as a learned institution equipped with treasures of knowledge maintained organized and manage by trained personnel to

Q1. History of Library
The first library appeared five thousand years ago in Southwest Asia's Fertile crescent, an area that ran from Mesopotamia to the Nile in Africa. These place was known as the cradle of Civilization, the fertile Crescent was the birthplace of writing, Sometime before 3000BC. The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing- the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in temple rooms in Sumer, some dating back to 2600BC. Writings were made on Mud-like clay which is being placed placed in wooden frames and were smoothed for writing. These tablets made of clay were later sun dried and sometimes baked in a kiln for a harder finish. For storage, the tablets were stored in a variety of containers such as wooden baskets of reeds or clay shelves and are stacked on edge, side by side with the contents described by a title written on the edge that faced out and was readily seen. The first two libraries which were recognizabke as organized collections were at Alexandria in Ptolemai, Egypt and Pergamum in Hellenic, Turkey.
Also, there is evidence of Libraries at Nippur about 1900BC and those at Nineveh about 700BC showing a library classification system. Over 30,000 clay tablets from the library of Ashurbanipal have been discovered at Nineveh, providing modern Scholars with an amazing wealth of Mesopotamia literary, religious and administrative work. Almond the findings were the Enuma Elish, also known as the Epic of Creation which depicts a traditional Babylonian view of creation, 'The epic of Gilgamesh', a large selection of 'Omen texts' including Enuma Anu Enil which "contained omens dealing with the moon, it's Visibility, eclipses, and conjunction with planets and fixed stars, the sun, it's Corona, spots and eclipse, the weather; Lightning, thunder and clouds as well as the planets and their visibility, appearance, and stations" and astronomic/ astrological texts as well as standard lists used by scribes and scholars such as word lists, bilingual vocabularies, list of signs and symptoms and list of medical diagnosis.
According to Legend, mythical philosopher; Laozi was the keeper of books in the earliest library in China, which belonged to the imperial Zhou Dynasty. Also, evidence of catalogues found in some destroyed ancient libraries illustrates the presence of librarians.

THE HISTORY OF LIBRARY IN NIGERIA.
The history of library in Nigeria begins with the establishment of a major library in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan in the year 1948.
In the year 1959, there was a library in the Eastern region and at that time a plan to develop regional libraries and mobile ones with over 1600 books had been created. In the year 1960, the library of Nsukka ; UNN, was established and named after Nnamdi Azikiwe who can be said to be a founding fathers of library as part of Nigeria's educational system.
The establishment of a library advisory committee by the Nigeria Government in the 1950s led to the renaming of the Nigerian Division of the WALA to the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) in 1962. This group of persons were able to work out plans for Library services in the country and also persuaded the government to set up a national library which became a reality in the year 1964 in the month of September after the National library act was enacted.
Prior to this establishment UNESCO released a document in 1962 stating that each Nigerian region should be responsible for the creation and regulation of the activities of public libraries in Nigeria.

1. Summarize the background history of library
Answer:- The history of libraries in the accient world: In earliest times there was no distinction between a record room/archive and a library, and in this sense libraries can be said to have existed for almost as long as records have been kept. A temple in the Babylonian town of Nippur, dating from the first half of the 3rd millennium BC, was found to have a number of rooms filled with clay tablets, suggesting a well-stocked archive or library. Similar collections of Assyrian clay tablets of the 2nd millennium BC were found at Tell el-Amarna in Egypt. Ashurbanipal (reigned 668–c.
In ancient China, for example, the emperor Shih huang-ti, a member of the Ch’in dynasty and ruler of the first unified Chinese empire, ordered that historical records other than those of the Ch’in be destroyed so that history might be seen to begin with his dynasty. Repression of history was lifted, however, under the Han dynasty, which succeeded the Ch’in in 206 BC; works of antiquity were recovered, the writing of literature as well as record keeping were encouraged, and classification schemes were developed. Some favoured a seven-part classification, which included the Confucian classics, philosophy, rhymed work (both prose and poetry), military prose, scientific and occult writings, summaries.
Greece and Alexandria: libraries as the word was understood for several centuries, had its origin in the classical world. Most of the larger Greek temples seem to have possessed libraries, even in quite early times; many certainly had archive repositories. The tragedian Euripides was known as a private collector of books, but the first important institutional libraries in Athens arose during the 4th century BC with the great schools of philosophy. Their texts were written on perishable materials such as papyrus and parchment, and much copying took place. The Stoics, having no property, owned no library; the schools of Plato and of the Epicureans did possess libraries, the influence of which lasted for many centuries. But the most famous collection was that of the Peripatetic school, founded by Aristotle and systematically organized by him with the intention of facilitating scientific research. A full edition of Aristotle’s library was prepared from surviving texts by Andronicus of Rhodes and Tyrannion in Rome about 60 BC. The texts had reached Rome as war booty carried off by Sulla when he sacked Athens in 86 BC.
Aristotle’s library formed the basis, mainly by means of copies, of the library established at Alexandria, which became the greatest in antiquity. It was planned by Ptolemy I Soter in the 3rd century BC and brought into being by his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus with the collaboration of Demetrius of Phaleron, their adviser. The founders of this library apparently aimed to collect the whole body of Greek literature in the best available copies, arranged in systematic order so as to form the basis of published commentaries. Its collections of papyrus and vellum scrolls are said to have numbered hundreds of thousands. Situated in a temple of the Muses called the Mouseion, it was staffed by many famous Greek writers and scholars. it was staffed by many famous Greek writers and scholars.
.2. Define what you understand by the term Library.
Answer:- A Library is a group of collection or an institution of books(printed or non printed) materials organized and maintained for the use of study, reading, consultation and research.

During 1665, the public libraries started emerging in American colonies when many early colonists brought books from England. Reverend Thomas Bray established nearly 70 libraries in American colonies during 1695 to 1704. Later, Sir Benjamin Franklin established the Library Company of Philade
Current academic libraries in the digital age
In the long journey of history, libraries appeared to be repository spaces to preserve the essentials of human civilisations. Defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary, the library is described as ‘a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to’ (Mckean, 2005). Since the ancient Roman Empire, libraries have been used as places to store all kinds of information, including artistic, historical, literary, military, musical, reference materials and so on. Having gone through so many changes and innovations over the past 2,000 years, what functions and roles have academic libraries displayed in the modern society? What new inventions, innovations and products are changing ways of information delivery and dissemination in academic libraries? How will the digital revolution impact on academic library information resources and services in the future? Once we find out all of these answers, it will be much easier for us to predict correctly which way the future of academic libraries will evolve in the digital age.
I understand that a library is a room or a a building where books are kept and stored both hard and soft copies for reference purposes and researches in an accessible way for the user

The history of libraries began with the very first effort to collect and organise documents.
According to research the word library was originated from Latin, from the word libraria meaning "place storing books" and the word liber in Latin means "book" whereas a latinized Greek word "Bibliotheca" is the origin of the word for library in German, Russian Romance languages.
