    HISTORY OF LIBRARY

It is believed that the first libraries appeared five thousand years ago in Southwest Asia’s Fertile Crescent, an area that ran from Mesopotamia to the Nile. The world’s oldest known library is believed to be The Library of Ashurbanipal. which was founded sometime in the 7th century B.C. for the “royal contemplation” of the Assyrian ruler Ashurbanipal. Located in Nineveh in modern day Iraq, the site included a trove of some 30,000 cuneiform tablets organized according to subject matter. The library, named after Ashurbanipal, in fact the last great king of the Assyrian Empire, is a collection of more than 30,000 clay tablets and fragments containing contemporary texts of all kinds, including a number in various languages.

According to research, the word “library” originated in Latin, from the word Libraria, meaning “place storing books” and the Latin liber, meaning “book,” whereas a Latinized Greek word, bibliotheca, is the origin of the word for library in German,They provide countless resources, such as educational materials, trainings, courses, scientific publications, etc. to visitors.

    HISTORY OF LIBRARIES
The main aim of library is to preserve knowledge and before library was brought about, there was two major ways of preserving knowledge which were:'the Chinese invented paper which made it easier to preserve and a German national Gutternberg who invented a printing machine and helped in librarianship and writing. No one knows when the first library was established but two significant factors provided impetus for the creation which are the rise of commercials and the invention of writing. The earliest written records date from 3000BC and probably from Sumeria or Mesopotamia. Sumeria due to it being a busy commercial centre,Transactions were recorded on tablets or Cuneiform which was both pictographic and phonographic. Writing and reading were considered as sacred activities and dey to clay not being plentiful, scrolls were made from papyrus plant. The earliest Egyptian libraries probably emerged around 2400BC. The library of Edfu had a collection of practical and spiritual materials that included legal documents, official letters, astrology and medicine. The 8th century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal was a learned man with knowledge. He believed that libraries should not only maintain archival records but also serve as a source of current reference materials to contribute to the education of the future generations. He expanded his library at his palace in Nineveh,Mesopotamia begun by his great grandfather Sargon the second. The library of Ashurbanipal was the greatest of its time and had rich collections of materials and information on Mesopotamia and its culture. Greece was primarily an oral culture, the size of Geeek libraries were on different small and large collections. Plato had a large library although he believed written materials were problematic. His student Alexander played a major role in promoting his library and after Alexander's death, his conquered land were divided and Ptolemy Soter was given Egypt which together with his son Ptolemy Philadeus founded the Alexandrian Museum And Library. After the Alexandrian was destroyed, learned people from Greece migrated to Rome and taught . Which by 1st century, there were many libraries in Rome. The first public library was created in Rome. Then the middle ages which extended broadly from about AD 300 to 1500 which included Byzantine and Islamic libraries, monastic libraries, cathedral university libraries of the late middle age. After we had the humanistic mission and re-emergence of the library for personal status till now, which is the modern period where computers and other gadgets were introduced .

    2. Library in my own understanding is an establishment charged with the care of collection of books,audio-visual,printed or non printed materials ,properly organised and made available for users.

    HISTORY OF LIBRARY

1: It is believed that the first libraries appeared five thousand years ago in Southwest Asia’s Fertile Crescent, an area that ran from Mesopotamia to the Nile.

The American librarian, academic and author Jesse H. Shera (1903-1982) has left us (thankfully!) an incredible amount of writings on library science; here we will have a look at an article called On the value of library history (1952), where Shera attempted 'to examine the contribution which history can make to an understanding of the role of the library in society'. It can be said that he had always been concerned with the social function of libraries, and his Sociological foundations of librarianship (1970) is still fundamental reference to the studies of libraries in society. In this brief article, however, his focus is on the value of library history, and to address this question Shera set firm ground using the work of another librarian, academic and author, Lee Pierce Butler (1884-1953). He starts his paper by noting how, in the 1930s, Butler was resisting trends in librarianship of focusing on 'process rather than on function' and on techniques of manipulation and administration by announcing the importance of library history:
In opposition to this excessive preoccupation with the techniques of library operations, Pierce Butler wrote his Introduction to Library Science. In this credo not only did he set forth a philosophic frame of reference within which librarianship could be seen as an integral part of the contemporary culture, but he argued strongly for a recognition of history as basic to an understanding of the library in relation to its coeval culture. Not only did he reveal that a knowledge of history is essential to the librarian's complete intellectual equipment, but he showed history itself to be the logical starting point for almost every inquiry into the nature and function of the library as a social agency. (Shera, 1952)

2: “Library -- from the Latin liber, meaning "book." In Greek and the Romance languages, the corresponding term is bibliotheca. A collection or group of collections of books and/or other print or nonprint materials organized and maintained for use (reading, consultation, study, research, etc.). Institutional libraries, organized to facilitate access by a specific clientele, are staffed by librarians and other personnel trained to provide services to meet user needs. By extension, the room, building, or facility that houses such a collection, usually but not necessarily built for that purpose. Directory information on libraries is available alphabetically by country in World Guide to Libraries, a serial published by K.G. Saur. Two comprehensive worldwide online directories of library homepages are Libdex and Libweb. See also the UNESCO Libraries Portal. Abbreviated lib. 1.The history of library.
The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC. Private or personal libraries made up of written books appeared in classical Greece in the 5th century BC. In the 6th century, at the very close of the Classical period, the great libraries of the Mediterranean world remained those of Constantinople and Alexandria.

The Fatimids (r. 909–1171) also possessed many great libraries within their domains. The historian Ibn Abi Tayyi’ describes their palace library, which probably contained the largest collection of literature on earth at the time, as a "wonder of the world". Throughout history, along with bloody massacres, the destruction of libraries has been critical for conquerors who wish to destroy every trace of the vanquished community's recorded memory. A prominent example of this can be found in the Mongol massacre of the Nizaris at Alamut in 1256 and the torching of their library, "the fame of which", boasts the conqueror Juwayni, "had spread throughout the world.

The libraries of Timbuktu were established in the fourteenth century and attracted scholars from all over the world.

2.libraries play a fundamental role in society. The resources and services they offer create opportunities for learning, support literacy and education, and help shape the new ideas and perspectives that are central to a creative and innovative society.

    Q1) HISTORY OF LIBRARY

The history of libraries began with the first efforts to organize collections of documents. Topics of interest include accessibility of the collection, acquisition of materials, arrangement and finding tools, the book trade, the influence of the physical properties of the different writing materials, language distribution, role in education, rates of literacy, budgets, staffing, libraries for targeted audiences, architectural merit, patterns of usage, and the role of libraries in a nation's cultural heritage, and the role of government, church or private sponsorship. Computerization and digitization arose from the 1960s, and changed many aspects of libraries.

Library history is a subdiscipline within library science and library and information science focusing on the history of libraries and their role in societies and cultures. Some see the field as a subset of information history.Library history is an academic discipline and should not be confused with its object of study.

the discipline is much younger than the libraries it studies. Library history begins in ancient societies through contemporary issues facing libraries today.Topics include recording mediums, cataloguing systems, scholars, scribes, library supporters and librarians.

Q2) WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE TERM LIBRARY?

The term "LIBRARY "is an organised building containing information resources and are made availble for a community of users for reference or borrowing purpose.

In other words, A library is a collection of materials, books or media that are accessible for use and not just for display purposes.

    History of Library
    1. The history of libraries began with the first efforts to organize collections of documents. Computerization and digitization arose from the 1960s, and changed many aspects of libraries.

Library history is the academic discipline devoted to the study of the history of libraries; it is a subfield of library science and of history.

The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing – the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in temple rooms in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC. About an inch thick, tablets came in various shapes and sizes. Mud-like clay was placed in the wooden frames, and the surface was smoothed for writing and allowed to dry until damp. After being inscribed, the clay dried in the sun, or for a harder finish, was baked in a kiln. For storage, tablets could be stacked on edge, side by side, the contents described by a title written on the edge that faced out and was readily seen. The first libraries appeared five thousand years ago in Southwest Asia's Fertile Crescent, an area that ran from Mesopotamia to the Nile in Africa. Known as the cradle of civilization, the Fertile Crescent was the birthplace of writing, sometime before 3000 BC. (Murray, Stuart A.P.) These archives, which mainly consisted of the records of commercial transactions or inventories, mark the end of prehistory and the start of history.

Things were much the same in the government and temple records on papyrus of Ancient Egypt. The earliest discovered private archives were kept at Ugarit; besides correspondence and inventories, texts of myths may have been standardized practice-texts for teaching new scribes. There is also evidence of libraries at Nippur about 1900 BC and those at Nineveh about 700 BC showing a library classification system.

Over 30,000 clay tablets from the Library of Ashurbanipal have been discovered at Nineveh, providing modern scholars with an amazing wealth of Mesopotamian literary, religious and administrative work.

According to legend, mythical philosopher Laozi was keeper of books in the earliest library in China, which belonged to the Imperial Zhou dynasty. Also, evidence of catalogues found in some destroyed ancient libraries illustrates the presence of librarians.
