In the 15th century, the invention of the printing press revolutionized the production of books and led to a proliferation of libraries throughout Europe. I. Libraries can be said to have existed for almost as long as records have been kept,The first library like was found in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC in a place called the Babylonian town of Nippur, Similar collections was found at tell El-Amarna in Egypt in the 2nd millennium BC.The last of the great kings of Assyria Ashurbanipal (reigned 668–c. 627 BC),, maintained an archive of some 25,000 tablets.
Libraries in the Western world began as archives in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.The two first libraries we know of which were recognizable as organized collections of written knowledge were at Alexandria in Ptolemaic Egypt and Pergamum in Hellenic Turkey.
In the later Middle Ages the stronghold that monasteries had on knowledge in Europe was loosened, as universities were founded in cities like Bologna and Paris, with college libraries to follow.
The development of library in Nigeria began in 1920 when the Lagos book club was formed. This club was formed by a group of expatriates and few Nigerians, The University College Ibadan was established in 1948 and Henry Carr’s collection formed the nucleus of the University Library.
